1. Golden Temple: The most significant and iconic of Amritsar’s historical monuments, this temple originates as far back as the 16^thcentury and is at the heart of Punjab’s cultural identity and the Sikh religion. The best time to visit is late in the evening or early in the morning as it is less crowded and there are some interesting ceremonies held here that you can witness.

2. Akal Takht: Located near the Golden temple, this historical site is the highest legal authority in the religion of Sikhism. Made by Guru Hargobind Ji, it was once just a raised platform that evolved into a monument to justice and sovereignty from where Sikh leaders would hand down decrees. Today, it is a beautiful five-story structure with a gold dome.

3. Durgiana Temple: A beautiful and serene place, the Durgiana temple is dedicated to goddess Durga and was built by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor in 1921. It features carved silver plated doors and exquisite architecture while surrounded by a lake. It is visited by many people of all faiths for its peaceful vibes and because it a symbol of unity and diversity in Punjab.

4. Jallianwala Bagh: Perhaps one of the most important historical sites related to India’s colonial past, the Jallianwala Bagh is a living monument to the bravery and tenacity of our freedom fighters who perished here in 1919 during one of the worst massacres in India’s modern history. The incident that occurred here was instrumental in powering the Indian Independence Movement that ultimately led to India gaining its freedom in 1947.

5. Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum: This is an interesting and important museum to visit, especially if you want to know more about one of the greatest leaders of Punjab and one of the most revered warriors in the world. The museum is made inside a summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and stores many important and authentic artifacts that tell a fascinating story.

6. Jama Masjid Khairuddin: Built by Mohd. Khairuddin in 1876, this iconic mosque is an integral part of Amritsar’s landscape. It is a famous structure that played a big part in India’s independence movement and is visited by thousands of worshippers everyday.

7. Fort Gobindgarh: Perhaps the best and most interesting historical monument in Amritsar, you can spend the whole day at the fort and still not see all that it has to offer. Inside, there are many things to do such as camel rides, museums, cultural shows, reenactments and restaurants. Mist people come here in the morning and spend the entire day exploring this ancient relic.

8. The Weapons Museum: Located inside Fort Gobindgarh, this museum is very popular with locals and tourists alike. The museum stores original and replica weapons such as swords, shields, spears, knives, guns and armor that were used by the legendary army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
